The Kalahari

The sun drenched Kalahari, with its ancient, undulating landscape, mystical sunsets, red Kalahari sand dunes and uncluttered horizons. The blanket of sand dunes is home to vultures and owls; springbok, gemsbok and black maned lions. Under the Dunes, you will find all kinds of precious ores. There has been mining in the area, luckily only on the surface. Home to 40 raptor and vulture species and 7 owl species, the Kalahari also supports a vast selection of game farms, which are plentiful with wildlife. Each day, millions of litres of crystalline, mineral rich water pour into this desert. Flowing from an amazing dolomite spring the Eye of Kuruman feeds forests of tall camethorn trees.

The Green Kalahari

A land of contrasts, where valleys of lush green vineyards follow the mighty Orange River through the surrounding red sands and black granite rock. Vast tracts of bleak, shimmering semidesert contrast dramatically with lush green vineyards filling the Orange River’s fertile valleys. The massive body of water meanders through a giant valley of its making, being at its most impressive at the Augrabies Falls National Park, where the deafening fury of a huge torrent of angry water plummeting 56m down a series of granite cataracts speaks volumes for the river’s awesome power. By 1884, the river had been claimed by colonialists, and irrigation and development followed. Today, you can travel peacefully from wine cellars to tearooms in the desert; from a luxurious lodge to the desolation of Verneukpan. Yet, not all is tamed. The mighty Kgalagadi Transfrontier Park, Africa’s first transfrontier park, comprises almost 3.7 million hectares of sparsely vegetated, red sand dunes and dry riverbeds. The reserve provides sanctuary for gemsbok, springbok, blue wildebeest, red hartebeest, eland, lion, leopard, cheetah and smaller game. One of Africa’s last pristine game reserves, the size of the park allows for the mass migration of different species, a sight inducing awe and deepseated emotion.

The Diamond Fields

The memories of the Kimberley tent-town’s days linger of frenetic activity of 30 000 mineworkers working 3 600 claims. Many old buildings, museums and one of South Africa’s most important art galleries lend an historic ambience to the city that thrust its way to prominence during the diamond rush. A reconstruction of the original ‘rush town’ stands alongside the incredible Big Hole, the largest hand-dug excavation in the world, offering visitors insight into the lives of those who lived and worked through the dreams and nightmares of a vibrant history we take for granted. During the Anglo-Boer War,the Boers besieged Kimberley for 4 months. In this time, many heroes rose to prominence. Boer forces surrounding Kimberley showed how a determined, small and under-resourced force could keep the British army at bay for months. However, Kimberley’s diamond story and the siege are parts of only the most recent history here. A rich archaeological heritage, including stunning examples of ancient rock engravings, reflects a past that reaches back to the very origins of humankind.
